Supreme Court will hear extradition appeals in U.S. double murder

OTTAWA – The Supreme Court of Canada will hear two extradition cases tied to a decades-old double murder in New Hampshire.

Anthony Barnaby and David Caplin are wanted by American authorities in a renewed investigation into the 1988 murders of two women.

Barnaby was tried three times in the killings of Charlene Ranstrom and Brenda Warner, but each trial ended in a hung jury and charges were dismissed after the third mistrial.

Caplin was charged, but the charges were dropped after some evidence was ordered excluded.

The investigation was re-opened in 2010 and the federal government ordered both men extradited.

The Quebec Court of Appeal overturned Barnaby’s extradition, but declined to interfere in Caplin’s case.
