Calgary’s McCurdy cashes in on scholarship from NHL

A 17-year old goaltender from Calgary has earned a scholarship from the NHL.
Nicholas McCurdy plays in the HEROS program, the hockey education reaching out society in Forest Lawn.
McCurdy has been awarded the 2014 NHL/Thurgood Marshall College Fund Academic Scholarship, to attend any college or university in Canada or the US.
“I don’t know if there’s any other way I could get into university and affording it. This is a really big advancement for me and I’ll make a huge return advancement on what I can do with this because I cannot be more proud of myself and what I’ve done and the people around me have helped me get here,” says McCurdy.
He plans on studying Kinesiology at the University of Calgary.
The Thurgood Marshall College Fund has been awarding scholarships to people involved in Hockey is for Everyone programs since 2012.
The NHL’s Hockey is for Everyone initiative is the League’s official youth development program that provides support and unique programming to non-profit youth organizations across North America – including the Fort Dupont Ice Hockey Club and the HEROS program – committed to offering children of all backgrounds opportunities to play hockey.
Since its launch in 1998, Hockey Is For Everyone has provided support to more than 45,000 boys and girls.
HEROS focuses on kids of diverse ethnicity from economically challenged neighbourhoods.
