“The Calgary Flames have won the Stanley Cup! We’re the winners! We’re the winners! Yeah baby, yeah baby, yeah baby!”
Former Flames play-by-play man Peter Maher said those words 25 years ago Sunday, when Calgary won their lone Stanley cup.
One of the most popular Flames during that time was Lanny McDonald scoring his final goal, one that often gets replayed.
He said he remembers it fondly, especially the feed from Joe Nieuwendyk to set it up.
“The pass was fantastic in between (Chris) Chelios’ stick and skates right on my stick and we knew if Patrick Roy came across you had to go top shelf because he spreads everything else out and that’s the only chance you had to score,” the former captain told Sportsnet 960 The Fan.
Another Flame from that team, Joel Otto, remembers the night vividly.
“I remember the night before, it was a tough sleeping night,” he said. “You know you’ve put yourself in a position that there is a possibility and excitement, nerves, butterflies throughout the day until the puck gets dropped and then you’re focused on the game.”
“We had such a great team, 20 guys that knew their roles, were able to play a hockey game against a pretty good hockey club in Montreal,” Otto added. “To win in Montreal with the storied history was very, very special.
Most of the players from that championship team have gathered in the city this weekend for a reunion.
