One of the victims of the Brentwood stabbings in April is being honored with a posthumous degree during the University of Calgary’s graduation ceremonies on Tuesday.
The Faculty of Arts will grant a posthumous Bachelor of Arts degree in Urban Studies to Lawrence Hong, one of five people killed at a house party in Brentwood on April 15th.
Fellow U of C students Jordan Segura, a 3rd year Religious Studies major and Joshua Hunter who was enrolled in the Haskayne School of Business were also killed along with Zackariah Rathwell and Kaitlin Perras.
Arts Dean Richard Sigurdson describes Hong as one of the faculty’s shining stars and was passionate about urban planning.
He was also a volunteer at the Q-Centre on campus, which offers resources for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered and queer students.
Another posthumous degree will be granted to Brett Weise, who was a third-year Bachelor of Commerce student when he was fatally stabbed at a party on January 12th, 2013.
University President Elizabeth Cannon says granting them these well-deserved degrees is a way to honour their memories.
