City officially opens Barb Scott Park

Speaking in front of a large crowd carrying umbrellas over the noon hour, Calgary’s mayor helped cut the ribbon to what he called a “jewelbox of Calgary’s beltline communities”; and with that Barb Scott Park was officially opened.

The park, located in the old Carl Safran school yard on 12th Avenue, is named after a beloved community advocate and long-time city alderman who passed away during the park’s planning process.

Drawing from conversations he had had with Scott, Mayor Naheed Nenshi said her memory will be honoured every time kids play soccer or someone stretches out on a bench to read a book.

“She was just so excited about this park and she thought that it was the perfect tribute to what she believed in and I wish she was here,” said Nenshi. “But you know what, she’s here in every blade of grass in this park, and that makes me very excited that were able to recognize such an amazing person, and an amazing woman.”

On Friday, a community party is to be held at the park from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. to celebrate the official opening.
