According to a Robert Half survey of more than 300 senior managers in Canada, you can ask about how much a potential job pays early in the selection process.
Sixty-three percent say do it during either the first or second interview.
Division Director of Robert Half Finance and Accounting Stuart Eliuk tells 660News that’s much earlier than popular belief but he believes there’s a good reason for the shift.
“You want to be able to avoid that pitfall down the road where you guys are not on the same page,” explains Eliuk.
“You just want to make sure it’s clear early on so you’re really not wasting each others time.”
Having said that, Eliuk adds salary shouldn’t be the first words out of your mouth in an interview, you should first talk about why you’re a good fit for the role.
Here are complete findings of the survey of when candidates should ask about compensation.
Phone Interview 12%
First Interview 38%
Second Interview 25%
Third interview or after 8%
Once you make the job offer 13%
Other/don’t know 4%
Total 100%
