It was the ride of a lifetime.
1,763 cyclists completed the 200-km Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer this weekend, wrapping up Sunday evening at Canada Olympic Park.
The route began Saturday in Calgary, going through Bragg Creek to Okotoks, and then returning to the city.
It was an emotional ride for many, including Glyn Hughes, who was diagnosed with cancer a year ago Sunday.
“I can’t believe in one year how much your body comes back,” he said, adding he’s gotten tremendous support and treatment. “I do have an issue with a lymph node right now that they are going to examine tomorrow so my journey’s not finished I guess.”
For an event that raised $7.9 million for cancer research, he said he wouldn’t be anywhere else.
“Just fantastic,” he said. “Great camaraderie, everybody cheers for each other, the volunteers are fantastic.”
The CEO of the Alberta Cancer Foundation, Myka Osinshuk, echoed Hughes’ comments.
“There are families cheering on their members who are riding, their friends, having come through the finish line, it’s very rare to experience so many people cheering for you, so it’s really an exceptional experience,” she said.
