As the last long weekend of summer arrives, the province is out with a warning for boaters to clean, drain, and dry their boats.
The reminder comes after officials found two boats with zebra mussels so far this summer.
Since June 9th, provincial weigh station inspectors have looked over more than 2500 boats for the invasive mussel species that can destroy ecosystems and damage water operated infrastructure.
Lisa White with Canada Border Services says even their agents are watching for them.
“We have had officers who have intercepted boats that were being imported into Canada, and even though they were cleaned, they still had zebra mussels on them,” said White. “They’re obviously a very invasive species.”
Inspection sites at the Dunmore, Vermilion, Burmis and Coutts weigh stations as well as at various provincial parks will remain open until the end of September.
