Internationally-acclaimed movies shine at the Calgary European Film Festival

More countries have joined the Calgary European Film Festival this year and movie fans will get a chance to see them November 14th to 16th.

Nine movies from nine countries will be screened.

The mix of comedies and dramas come from countries including Germany, Switzerland, Poland and the Czech Republic.

Spokesperson Mariet Mintchev said they’re hoping to expand the event.

“We would like to do more and more countries to join us and next year we are going to invite more countries and we’re hoping that we’ll have a longer festival and maybe two movies at the same time or maybe even two shows,” she said.

The productions have been nominated for international awards, some were winners at the Cannes Film Festival, and others have been screened at the César Awards, Seattle International Film Festival, Palm Springs International Film Festival, Berlin International Film Festival, Manhattan Film Festival, Golden Rose, and many more.

The French comedy, “Me, Myself and Mum”/”Les garçons et Guillaume, à table!”  (2013) has 12 wins and 10 nominations, including five César Awards and two at Cannes.

The German comedy-drama “A Coffee in Berlin” / “Oh Boy” (2012) has 25 wins and 15 nominations.  The 2013 Golden Berlin Bear was awarded to the Romanian production that will close the Calgary European Film Festival: “Child’s Pose”/”Pozitia copilului”.

All movies will be shown at the Globe Cinema downtown at 617-8th Ave., S.W. starting Friday.
