New exhibit helps Calgarians see Great War through contemporary eyes

The University of Calgary’s Military Museums Library has launched a new exhibit that will help Calgarians to see the Great War through contemporary eyes.

It’s taken months to assemble the collection of various media that includes video games, film clips, comic books and graphic novels.

“We were looking at trying to do something with multi-media collections,” Library Head Jerremie Clyde said. “We realized that the Second World War gets told a lot, but the First World War which is so important and told the story of Canada;  there’s very little in any of the popular media forms. We thought we would pull from our collections and see what we could find.”

Clyde tells 660News there’s about a dozen different comic books, a video game from 1981 and Valiant Hearts set up on the PS3.

“We have some sources, letters, comics, cartoons from the war itself, you can look at those and start looking at the contrast and raise your own awareness,” he said.

The Military Museums Library and Archive is open to the public, Monday to Friday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

He adds, some of the material may not be suitable for all ages, so parental discretion is certainly encouraged.

The exhibit is expected to run until the holidays.
