Fire officials urge space heater safety this winter

The Calgary Fire Department is reminding Calgarians to keep fire safety top of mind this winter.

Officials say they are commonly called to preventable blazes this time of year caused by food left on the stove, candles or space heaters.

Fire spokesperson Carol Henke tells City News, residents are urged to never leave home without turning a space heater off and to keep them away from flammable materials.

“The potential risk with that is that if the space heater is too close to anything that’s combustible, which is pretty much anything in our home, a fire could start and that is potentially very dangerous.”

In Airdrie, space heaters were cited as the cause for one-third of home heating fires and 80 per cent of home heating fire deaths.
