Councillor says planned ‘gated community’ not concerning

A man-made island in Mahogany will be the first gated community in Calgary since 2001.
The Planning Commission is bending the rules to allow the condo complex to erect a gate, even as many express concern that this sends the wrong message about inclusiveness in our city.
At least one councillor sees it differently: Shane Keating argues while there are many areas of the city, where a gated area might not be appropriate, Mahogany Manor is private property, and consists of only 22 homes.
Keating adds, constructing a fence is much more friendly than the alternative.
“They could put a sign on the entrance of this road of the bridge that says this is private land you may not enter, and nobody could enter,” he said. “But, to me that’s much more offensive than just putting a gate on there.
He says, the rules could be loosened a bit, and each proposed gated community looked at on a case by case basis.
“There could be a slight change to the by-law that says when it’s in these circumstances, which again you would have to have some fairly strong wording to say it doesn’t impede, doesn’t cause problems with the general traffic and pedestrian flow of the community, then maybe you would look at it,” he said.
