Agriculture minister says Alberta BSE case will not affect beef trade

CALGARY – Federal Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz says a case of mad cow disease in Alberta will not affect Canada’s international beef trade.

Ritz says Canada works under international protocols that allow for up to 12 cases of BSE a year.

He says the most-recent case is the first in Canada since 2011.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency says no part of the animal’s carcass entered the human food or animal feed systems.

The agency says the disease was detected through a national surveillance program.

The CFIA says it is still trying to determine the history of the animal and how it became infected.
