Avid skier idenfitifed as latest avalanche victim

RCMP say the victim of Saturday’s avalanche in K-Country was an avid skier and snow patroller.

34-year-old Benjamin John Thackeray died as a result of injuries sustained in the Mount Black Prince area of Peter Lougheed Provincial Park in Kananaskis Country.

Thackeray, who is from Canmore, and the rest of his group were very experienced in back country skiing and were well equipped to mitigate avalanche risk.

Two of the victims were able to hike out to get help. The remaining three victims were airlifted by helicopter from the side of the mountain to the staging area.

Thackeray operated a rafting tour company in the summer months, while working at Nakiska Ski Resort in the winter.
