Smoking can intensify anxiety, depression: study

If you think a cigarette helps calm your nerves, a new study says you’re wrong.

Researchers looked at 6,500 people over the age of 40 and found that smokers are 70 per cent more likely to suffer from depression and anxiety than non-smokers.

The good news: you can improve your mental health by butting out.

The study also finds long-term ex-smokers had the same anxiety and depression rates as those who’d never smoked.

The findings were released by the British Heart Foundation.
