Calgary fire crews still have 17th and 18th Avenues shut down, along with Centre Street after the wake of a major fire.
Firefighters will remain on scene overnight watching for flareups and hot spots after a blaze broke out just before noon Saturday.
The fire was noticed by passersby at a condo building under construction in the 0-100 block of 17th Avenue near Centre Street.
Emergency crews have closed off 17th and 18th Avenues between 1st Street S.E. and 2nd Street S.W. until further notice.
Acting Battalion Chief Brian Loschuk:
“There hasn’t been any signs of fire for a while, but just as a precaution we’ll keep all units on scene and as it stands now, we have a codes officer that is basically, overall management for anything other than the fire,” he says.
Emergency officials are also working with a demolition contractor on scene and Loschuk adds City By-law and the property owners will have to decide what happens to what’s left of the building, after all is said and done.
Crews believe the fire originated on the second floor.
