Job seekers in Calgary facing steep competition

With the plunge in oil prices, and layoffs hitting the energy sector hard, it appears job seekers are also being put at a disadvantage.

Postings on a locally-focused job board are down more than 15 per cent compared to this time last year, according to Angie Friesen with CalgaryJobShop.ca.

Friesen notes, while it may mean more competition for job seekers, it’s a benefit for employers, who are getting more qualified applicants to choose from.

“The actual traffic to the sites is up big time, to the actual job posting,” she explained.

She adds, those looking for work may see relief soon.

“We’re trending fully back upwards,” she said. “We sort of saw a decline, you know, in the New Year, but we’re starting to climb back up.”

She says there’s no single sector that has dropped off in posting jobs significantly, just fewer of the same positions being listed.
