A Dutch research foundation hired to study flood mitigation plans for the Highwood River is recommending they don’t divert water around High River but instead remove obstacles from the river channel to allow more water to flow.
The Deltares Report concludes diversion projects or dry dams on the Highwood be avoided because they can’t be economically justified.
High River Mayor Craig Snodgrass tells 660News the recommendation follows up on what they’ve already been doing.
“Well the two neighbourhoods that we took out of the Beechwood and Wallaceville that was another massive scale improvement and the other part was the Highwood Golf Course where we ended up sacrificing 9 holes for wider flood way through town,” says Snodgrass.
Environment and Sustainable Resource Development says they still haven’t made a decision on whether to move forward with the recommendations in the report.
