Hockey Calgary officials are surprised to learn about a new study out of Virginia Tech that finds most hockey helmets on the market are failing to meet adequate ratings for safety.
The research shows that 25 out of 32 helmets tested using various impacts are not meeting safety standards to prevent concussions.
Kevin Kobelka, with Hockey Calgary, says they use only C.S.A. approved helmets and notes there are other studies that say the helmets are indeed safe.
“I’m that sure that the organizations that build those helmets and manufacture those helmets are going to come back and say they have done other testing. I guess that’s the question, what is the right test, what is the right safety valve, and is anything going to totally take concussions out of the mix? I don’t know I can’t answer that question.” Kobelka told City News.
The researchers say there is no such thing as a concussion proof helmet but they believe other designs would be more effective.
