Wednesday woes on Calgary roads

An annual list ranking the most traffic congested cities around the world is out from a popular GPS manufacturer, and it’s somewhat good news for Calgarians.

We are the lowest ranked Canadian city on the list from TomTom, and we don’t even crack the top 100 worst in the world. We’re not too far out of it though, at 101 of 146 of the most populated regions on the globe.

Of course that doesn’t change the fact that day to day, the time spent in the car may seem increasingly unbearable.

The rankings are based on 2014 data, showing the average driver with a 30 minute commute was delayed 68 hours over the course of the year. That’s almost 3 days!

The worst day to be in the car? Wednesday.

The most congested specific day last year? Friday, November 28.

As far as the peaks are concerned, it seems Friday morning and Monday evening are the best times to be on the road.

By comparison, Vancouverites, living in the worst congested city in Canada, spent 86 hours in traffic last year.

Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal and Edmonton rank second through fifth in the country.

The worst large city in the world for traffic in the TomTom report is Istanbul, Turkey.
