Reminder to dog owners: know your city animal laws

It’s spring and that means dog owners are likely heading out for longer walks.
Jondrea de Ruyter with Bylaw Services tells 660News, don’t forget that dogs need to be kept under control in on-leash and off-leash areas. “This means your dog must respond to sight and sound commands,” she continues, “and regarding dogs on pathways, it’s important to note that all of Calgary’s pathways are on-leash for dogs, even in off-leash areas.”
De Ruyter also says the dog leashes used on pathways can’t be longer than two meters.
“Dogs are not permitted on school grounds, playgrounds, sports fields, golf courses, cemeteries, wading or swimming pools,” she said, “owners must also ensure that their dogs don’t enter or swim in any body of water within a park, with the exception of a river that runs through or next to a city park.”
And another reminder; taking your dog out for a walk on a leash while on a bike, a skateboard, or wearing in-line skates is not allowed.
