Fire burning at Terminals in Squamish, BC

A large dock fire is burning at Terminals in Squamish, BC.

The freighter has been moved out of the danger zone as crews work to put out the flames.

A large amount of smoke is filling the air and it’s described as smelling pungent and toxic.

Darren McPeake with our sister station Mountain FM says the fire is at the Terminal building near Nexen Beach. “We can see bright orange flames and there is huge amounts of thick, black smoke billowing out.”

He says smoke is blanketing downtown Squamish.

Squamish Mayor Patricia Heintzman says it’s obvious a petroleum product is burning. “It’s a very strong, pungent, toxic type smell coming off the smoke.” She says the annual general meeting for the BIA had to be cut short because the smell became too overwhelming.

RCMP are telling people to get indoors and stay inside if they’re in the immediate area of the fire.
