Tribute to founder John Forzani at Mother’s Day Run

Thousands of people wearing sneakers and t-shirts and downing water bottles can rest their legs after an expected record attendance at the 38th annual Sport Chek Mother’s Day Run, Walk and Ride.

Organizers estimated record crowds of about 15,000 people at the Chinook Centre starting line.

Todd Birss, general manager of the Forzani Foundation, told 660News the funds raised in the event will go to Neonatal Intensive Care Units at the Foothills Medical Centre, Rockyview General Hospital, Peter Lougheed Centre and South Health Campus.

“Well we build up a great partnership with the Calgary Health Trust and the Neonatal Intensive Care Units over the past nine years, and each year we commit $200,000 dollars and what John Forzani always wanted to do was make sure that $200,000 dollars was spent correctly, so we actually met with them, figured out exactly what their needs are in terms of equipment and we’ve purchased that equipment,” Birss said.

This year will mark the first year without the founder, and former Calgary Stampeder, John Forzani who died suddenly back in October.

A special video tribute was be held Sunday morning followed by staggered start times to the 5k and 10k event.
