Mayor Naheed Nenshi doesn’t see a need to touch the City’s Animal Bylaw, even with an increase in dog attacks and bites across Calgary in recent weeks.
“It’s been proven over and over again that breed specific bans don’t work,” he said. “In fact, people from around the world come to Calgary to look at our responsible pet ownership bylaw as an example for what really does work”.
As a result, Nenshi says he’s not really interested in making changes to it.
He did concede, he would be willing to talk to Bylaw, to see if stiffer penalties for offending pet-owners would make a difference.
“I absolutely could be open to stiffer penalties,” he said. “It’s been a while since we’ve looked at those, and I’ll look to our experts in Animal and Bylaw Services to tell us if that would help”.
The Mayor’s comments come after teen girl was bit Wednesday morning, this time in the community of Dover.
