Alberta Premier Rachel Notley will hold her first cabinet meeting in Calgary Wednesday.
The cabinet includes the four NDP incumbents from the last Legislature session, plus eight newcomers.
With the ministers picked, the hard work is now about to begin.
Mount Royal University Political Scientist, Duane Bratt tells City News the cabinet’s size is something that sticks out.
“This is dramatically smaller than anything we’ve seen in decades. I don’t think this is an ideological ‘let’s have small government,’ I think this is about the small talent pool that she has,” Bratt said.
Bratt says the cabinet is inexperienced, with just four members having spent time in the legislature, including Rachel Notley.
Many people have also talked about the fear of the ‘unknown’ with Notley and the NDP, but Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi thinks that claim is overblown:
“People in the energy sector by and large say to me: ‘Look, she made some promises so we know the corporate tax rate will go up. We’ll be ready for that.’ We can’t tell her to go back on her promises,” said Nenshi.
The legislature will resume sitting June 11 to choose a speaker with a throne speech is planned four days later.
