Joe Olson, the manager of the Livable Streets division in the the City of Calgary’s Transportation and Planning Dept. says the division has not received any major complaints about the new downtown bike lanes.
“There’s been no reported incidents, anyway, but we are kind of cautious at the driver intersections to make sure people are aware that this is something new, that the drivers are now crossing a cycle track that they didn’t have to before,” he said.
Olson said there has been some grumbling on social media, but nothing official has been filed with the city.
Olson said they counted about 800 cyclists using the 12th avenue leg of the new track on the first day.
He also said that the cycle tracks are for bicycles only. Skateboards, roller skates, or pedestrians are not permitted.
