Calgary students hitting the malls for ‘Back to School’ shopping

Some Calgary students will head back to school Monday and many others will hit the books again in just two more weeks.

Either way, it doesn’t leave a lot of time to get ready, and that includes back to school shopping.

This can be a challenge for those on a budget, but there are some helpful tips.

The first thing students should do is look at what they already have as not everything will need to be replaced and there’s a good chance a lot of stuff may still be kicking around the house.

Editor and Chief of Calgary’s Child Magazine, Ellen Percival, says when parents hit the malls with their kids, letting their child pick out the special item can make a big difference.

“Whether it’s a new pencil case or a new backpack, it’s always nice to have all of those things supplied laid out for the first day,” Percival said.

When it comes to clothes, she suggests trying consignment stores and pointed out they carry brand names too.

Extra cash could also be made by bringing in last year’s clothes that don’t fit.

The bottom line is to buy only what is needed and Percival said there will always be another sale around the corner and a lot of places to do price matching, so saving flyers could make a difference on the next purchase.
