Black bear tranquilized after being spotted in a tree in Woodbine

A black bear has been tagged and is being relocated into the wild, after it climbed up a tree Tuesday morning in a neighbourhood in Woodbine.

Fish and Wildlife spokesperson Brendan Cox said they were called to the scene in the 12000 block of 17th Street SW because the male bear wouldn’t get down on his own.

“It was tranquilized and then the fire department brought a vehicle in to help lift officers up to where the bear was and get it out of the tree,” Cox told 660 NEWS.

Cox added that their biggest concern was the sedated bear would fall and hurt itself, but firefighters safely got it into the bucket of a ladder and then down to safety.

This is the second time in three weeks Calgary has had a bear sighting.

A black bear was hanging around Signal Hill for several days in September going through residents’ trash.
