Alberta baseball academy relishing in Blue Jays success

Normally, the ballplayers at the Vauxhall Academy of Baseball in southern Alberta are on the field during the afternoon, either playing or practicing.

They played Wednesday in Lethbridge and academy manager Les MacTavish told 660 NEWS, the coaching staff made a deal with the players.

“Part of the assignment today would be to watch the Blue Jays game,” he explained. “We’re certainly excited. We’ve got a bunch of snacks and drinks in the players’ lounge.”

And they’re doing more than watching. They also have three questions they have to answer, in an essay-of-sorts.

They include studying a player’s mechanics, noting the body language of another player, and discussing team chemistry.

The academy in Vauxhall has been operating for 10 years. In that time, over 90 per cent of the players who have gone through the program have received scholarships, either in Canada or the U.S.
