Construction worker rescued from 17th Ave trench

A construction worker who reportedly slipped into a three-metre trench in the city’s southwest was rescued by firefighters early Saturday morning.
It happened around 2 a.m. at a construction site in the 700 block of 17th Ave southwest.
Upon arrival, the man was found lying at the bottom of the dugout.
CFD Battalion Chief John Cherweniuk told 660 NEWS the department’s Rope Rescue and Heavy Rescue Team assessed the scene to ensure the stability of the trench.
“They packaged the gentleman up who was conscious and alert, put him on a stretcher and used an aerial ladder and rope system to haul him out of there,” Cherweniuk said.
The man, believed to be in his 50’s, had apparently been walking along the edge of the trench when he slipped and fell in.
Occupational Health and Safety is investigating.
Less than 24 hours earlier, another worker at a construction site in the northwest died after being pinned between a backhoe and a concrete barrier.
