Poppy proceeds likely on par with last year

There’s some encouraging news from the Calgary Poppy Fund.

Spokesperson Joey Bleviss says things are looking up, after fears earlier this week, donations would be down.

“They’re just going around picking up the poppy pots, so, we don’t know what the count is yet, but I’m anticipating we’ll be on par with what we were last year. We were running about 10 per cent behind last week, but I understand now we’re just about at par,” he said.

That would add up to $2.2 million.

Bleviss says some of the money will go to buy produce for the Veterans Food Bank, and it’s desperately needed because the slumping economy has pushed up demand by 12 per cent.
