Trudeau Liberals make Question Period debut; Conservatives target tax plan

OTTAWA — A battle is brewing between the Trudeau Liberals and the Conservatives, as the new government sits for its first Question Period.

Conservatives are readying for battle with the new government over its plan to cut middle class income taxes, while increasing the tax rate on those making $200,000 or more per year.

Federal Opposition Leader Rona Ambrose says the government’s planned tax policies are about “big government and big spending.”

Ambrose adds, the recent throne speech made no mention of several important sectors of industry, including energy, auto, and agriculture.

“Which was very concerning, when we’re thinking about the fact that we need job creation in this country and we have to focus on the economy,” said Ambrose.

As the throne speech is debated in the House of Commons, this week, the government house leader says we’ll notice a less-partisan atmosphere; one where government MPs can speak more-freely, without fear of someone coming down on them with a proverbial hammer.

“We don’t want government members standing up and reading talking points that they didn’t write themselves, and that somebody ordered them to go in and read,” said Dominic Leblanc, in what was clearly a jab at the previous, Conservative government.

“We want MPs to be able to stand up, from all sides of the House…and speak on behalf of their constituencies,” Leblanc told Maclean’s on the Hill.

The first Question Period of the new session of Parliament begins at 12:15 p.m. MT
