Alberta Transportation will tackle Uber issues

Transportation Minister Brian Mason announced a plan to develop a reasonable framework for ride-for-hire companies such as Uber, which vowed to stop service in the province by Tuesday if the government didn’t support its proposed insurance framework.

“Our plan ensures customers who use ride-for-hire services are safe, that the people who transport have the necessary skills and knowledge, and that there is insurance in place in the event of an accident,” states Mason in a news release.

The province says by July 1, it will have an interim insurance product ready to provide coverage for Uber drivers and passengers. It says drivers will need at least a Class 4 licence, which is mandatory in most provinces for taxis and other commercial transportation services. The government also says all drivers will need to undergo a police background check.

Uber launched in Calgary last October, despite the City of Calgary not having the regulations in place to allow the company to operate. The city won an injunction against drivers last year, but the two agreed to work together on regulations.

Last week, Uber announced it will not operate in Calgary because the city’s rules were too strict.
