It’s a staggering number: 358 people who died in traffic accidents in the province between 2010 and 2014 were not wearing seatbelts.
Nearly 30 per cent of the fatalities were men aged 18 to 24.
Alberta Transportation is launching a safety campaign this month urging Albertans to buckle up, featuring a graphic depiction of what can happen when you don’t.
Officials say 200,000 people in the province risk their lives every day by not wearing proper restraints.
RCMP K Division’s Supt. Ian Lawson says police routinely see the tragic results.
“Wearing your seatbelt, and ensuring children of any age are properly secured is the most simple and effective thing you can do to reduce the chance of you or a loved one being harmed in a motor vehicle collision,” he said.
There can be financial consequences too.
Drivers face a $155 fine for each unrestrained passenger in their vehicle under the age of 16.
