Canadians most concerned about unemployment: survey

Ipsos-Reid has released results from a survey that show, unsurprisingly, most Canadians see unemployment as the biggest issue facing the country.

The survey asked respondents to choose three topics that concerned them the most in the country. Along with unemployment, the list included topics such as health care, education, terrorism, crime and violence, and climate change.

The numbers from Alberta will come as no surprise. They show a steady increase in worries over unemployment since mid-2015, when oil prices began to drop, and layoffs started.

According to the results, 78 per cent of Albertans placed unemployment at the top of the list of worries. That was followed by immigration control and health care.

The Atlantic provinces and Ontario have listed unemployment at the top of their lists since 2010, and it was still the biggest issue for those residents this year.

In B.C., where poverty and social inequality has been a prominent concern for most, unemployment took over as well.

Saskatchewan and Manitoba rated unemployment as their second highest national concern. Taxes topped their lists.

The only province that doesn’t seem to be concerned about employment issues is Quebec. In that province, unemployment ranked fifth on the list. In the top spot was health care, which was followed by taxes, poverty and social inequality, and education.
