Dream come true for hockey’s Hamilton brothers

It’s been nearly a decade since brothers suited up together for the Calgary Flames.

On Wednesday night, Dougie and Freddie Hamilton may change that.

Freddie, a 24-year-old forward, has skated in 53 games for Stockton of the American Hockey League this season, where he sits third on the club in points (35), goals (16) and assists (19).

Freddie said this is a special opportunity.

“We’ve been dreaming about this since we were little kids,” the elder Hamilton explained after pre-game skate. “We were very fortunate to play junior together. Obviously, those World Juniors here was the best experience for us so far in hockey and this would pretty awesome too. We’re both obviously very excited for the chance.”

The last time the Hamiltons played together was in Calgary during the 2012 World Juniors when they won the bronze medal. Since then, the Boston Bruins traded Dougie to Calgary last year, while Freddie was originally drafted by the San Jose Sharks and the Flames signed him as a free agent last fall.

Dougie calls this a special moment for their whole family, especially their parents.

“They are pretty excited obviously,” the 22-year-old blueliner said. “As a family, it’s something we’ve worked hard towards and it’s pretty cool that it’s possible right now.”

Head coach Bob Hartley told the media Freddie is a game time decision because Sean Monahan is questionable to play.

In 2006, Robyn and Richie Regehr were the last brotherly duo to suit up for the Flames.
