Long weekends often mean leaving the city for a quick vacation, but for Calgarians planning on sticking around this long weekend, there are still lots of activities to take part in.
Ahead of the Junos next weekend, the community of Kensington is hosting a music and cultural festival.
It kicks off Thursday and will feature live performances from local musicians, film screenings, and a pop-up jewellery show.
For a list of performances and venues, visit Kensington’s website.
On Friday, the Calgary Farmers’ Market will be joining in on Easter festivities.
After doing some shopping of local products, visitors can decorate Easter-themed cookies and families will be able to get photos taken with the Easter bunny.
For more information, visit the Market’s official website.
There’s good news for golfers this weekend as well.
The driving range and Front 9 greens will be open at the McCall Lake Golf Course on Saturday and 18 holes will be opening at the Shaganappi Point Golf Course as well.
The City’s website has more information on all the courses that are open this weekend.
For those not interested in spending their Saturday on the greens, they could head to the Thorncliffe Community Centre for Taste of Jamaica.
That runs from 12 p.m. until 8 p.m., and will feature musical performances, dance, and food from the Caribbean island. For more information, visit the Jamaican Canadian Association of Alberta’s website.
Anyone looking for a family-friendly activity just outside of the city can head to Mount Engadine Lodge, just south of Canmore, for an Easter scavenger hunt.
The free event will also have a campfire for roasting marshmallows and a barbeque. Cash donations will be accepted, with all proceeds going to the Bow Valley Food Bank.
For more information, visit the Mount Engadine website.
You can also head to Kensington; the community is hosting a music and culture festival ahead of the Junos next week.
“We will have a free movie playing at the Plaza Theatre, Transporter Refueled” Ellen Parker with the Kensington BRZ said. “So it’s a free movie starts at 7:00 p.m. with free pop and popcorn as well.”
Or you can head to the zoo for a great Easter egg hunt.
“We also have face painting, cookie decorating, Cococo Chocolatiers is our title sponsor and giving all kids ages 12 and under a full sized organic rainforest alliance chocolate bar” Roz Freeman with the Zoo said. “We also have Cobbs Corn Mazes, there’s meet and greets with princesses and super heroes, and the Canadian Rabbit Hopping Club is here and they do mini races with their rabbit collection, and that’s really adorable and neat to watch.”
That event will run Friday and Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
You can check out Spring Sparktacular at Telus Spark.
Along with seeing the science bunny, guests can Make-a-Moss ecosystem to get them into the gardening mood.
“And then we also have our egg drop challenge, which has proved to be a family favourite” says Erin Christensen. “So you get to test out your engineering skills by building up a contraption that will protect a [raw] egg from a fall, so you can use your imagination and come up with a device that will keep your egg intact as it makes its fall from a lofty distance.”
Check it out with your regular admission Friday and Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
