City crews patching fewer potholes this spring

As Eastern Canadians deal with one of the worst years in recent history for potholes, the City of Calgary is having a smooth spring.

The mild winter gave us a break when it comes to ruts in the road.

The warm, dry weather meant less moisture seeping into the ground, expanding the pavement, and turning into a driving hazard.

Roads Spokesperson Brittany Kustra says it’s meant less related calls to 311.

“All in all we’ve filled fewer potholes than we did last year, because of fewer new potholes forming, but in addition to that, we’ve been able to get to some of the smaller potholes that we weren’t able to get to last year,” she said.

The gaps they are filling in are significantly smaller.

That translates to a savings of both money and time for crews.

“We’ll be able to continue spring clean-up throughout April and May, and then work on more potholes, more gravel repair, lane repair, working on boulevards, all sorts of different maintenance activities,” she said. “That might have taken less of a priority if we had to focus so much on potholes.”
