Flooding most likely disaster to strike Calgary: CEMA

If a big disaster were to hit Calgary soon, it would likely be a flood.

That’s the assessment from Calgary’s Emergency Management Agency.

It’s no surprise flooding takes the top spot after the 2013 devastation cost Albertans $1.7 billion.

A report headed to council this week, says CEMA spends about 19 per cent of its mitigation strategy efforts on preparing for or preventing future flooding.

Up next on the list are snowstorms and blizzards, though after the past couple mild winters those may feel less likely to happen.

In 3rd place and no shock to Calgarians is hail, followed by another southern Alberta staple, windstorms.

Our city has an average of 13 days per year with wind speed in excess of 63 kilometres per hour.

Also making the top ten are infrastructure failures, major planned events like protests, explosions and fires, communication failures, energy supply issues, and rail incidents.
