Air Cadets mark 75th anniversary with downtown parade

Hundreds of air cadets marched through Calgary’s downtown Saturday afternoon.

The 52 Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron of Calgary marked the 75th anniversary with around five hundred on parade.

Captain Jeramie Welsh told 660 NEWS, they started from Mewata Armoury at 1 p.m. and headed to City Hall for a special ceremony with the mayor.

“The Freedom of the City parade dates back centuries to Rome where military units would actually have to stay outside city walls and if they got some sort of gracious honour bestowed upon them by the city then they would be able to come into the city and exercise their right to ‘freedom of the city.’ ”

The cadets program focuses on building leadership skills with youth between the ages of 12 and 19.
