Councillor raises concerns about Southwest Transitway budget

A city councillor is raising her voice over the Southwest Transitway’s swelling costs.

Diane Colley-Urquhart told her constituents in a video message she’ll be taking their concerns to City Hall Monday.

She says the project has been controversial, but she’s appreciated the dialogue from both those for and against the project.

“I am taking this forward with Mayor (Naheed) Nenshi and Councillor (Brian) Pincott, and we are going to be asking tough questions,” she said.

Five years ago, $40-million was approved for the budget, but the transitway is now projected to cost as much as $66-million.

“I am not prepared to steal from other projects in the city, in order for this budget to balloon and really escalate in cost,” Colley-Urquhart said.

She also plans to address concerns about how construction on 14 Street would impact the already congested roadway, especially alongside separate construction by ATCO.
