After 14 hours of deliberation, a jury has found three people guilty of first-degree murder in the killing of a Calgary man.
What is believed to be Ryan Lane’s charred remains were found in a burning barrel in a gravel pit near Beiseker in June of 2012 after he went missing in February.
Lane’s ex-girlfriend Sheena Cuthill, her husband Tim Rempel and his brother Will were found guilty by a four man, eight woman jury.
Both men were also found guilty of kidnapping.
Timothy Rempel’s lawyer, Allan Fay said he was disappointed by the outcome.
“I spoke to him before the verdict,” Fay said. “I can only assume, as he now faces a sentence of life in prison with no possibility of parole for 25 years, he’s feeling distraught.”
“It’s disappointing to lose and it’s always extremely disappointing when your client is sent to jail on a life sentence,” Fay added.
Crown prosecutor Tom Buglas said the decision represents closure for Lane’s family.
“This was a long and hard emotional trial for the family. Our system takes time to get to trial, so the wait itself was difficult on them.”
He also added that this was one of the most significant Calgary police investigations he’s ever known.
“Significant number of man hours in the search for Ryan Lane’s remains were invested. A number of investigative techniques were used. In a number of situations, the police made the decision to keep going and because of that we’re here today.”
