As the world continues to come to grips with the loss of music icon Prince, local artists are remembering the influence the singer had on their careers.
Prince’s last concert in Calgary was in 2011 and long-time local DJ, Erwin, co-host of the Dirty Needles show on CJSW, says it was a memorable show, followed by an intimate after party.
“He did basically a 30-45 minute set, just jammed out. And he ended the night off with a 20 minute rendition of Nothing Compares 2 U. It was probably one of the most epic experiences I’ve ever had in my entire life,” he said.
Erwin says Prince influenced a large number of people in Calgary’s DJ community.
“In the 80s when I was first introduced to him, it was Prince, it was Madonna, Whitney Houston, and Michael Jackson,” he said. “He was the only one out of all of them that was the pure rock star that could do everything. He could rock out, play guitar, but then do it wearing heels and a velvet suit.”
He says Prince’s music was beyond anyone else at that time, and it carried over throughout his career.
