They did have working smoke detectors in a major blaze in the northwest overnight.
Fire broke out in Royal Oak at around 12:30 this morning.
Chief Steve Dongworth says by the time emergency crews arrived, two homes were fully engulfed and beyond help.
“There are two homes there now that were significantly damanged. We are aware there were working smoke alarms in that building, to the best of our knowledge and everyone was able to self evacuate both of those buildings before we arrived,” said Dongworth.
More than a dozen other neighbouring homes had to be evacuated as a precaution.
Firefighters remain on the scene to ensure no flareups.
