Nenshi welcomes wildfire evacuees to Calgary

Mayor Naheed Nenshi officially welcomed evacuees from Fort McMurray Sunday.

He visited the University of Calgary where hundreds are staying.

“I want to say Happy Mother’s Day to everyone. I know that there are a lot of folks who are not with their families today, but for those who are, I hope you can enjoy a little bit of time together, and a little bit of gratitude for being safe, for being here, for being in the community,” he said. “And a special Happy Mother’s Day to a brand new mom. I understand that one of our evacuees gave birth to a healthy baby boy here in Calgary, and mom and son are doing well.”

Nenshi encouraged the evacuees to take their minds off the disaster, by enjoying free amenities being offered in the city, including swimming and free admission to the Calgary Zoo.

There are currently four places housing displaced people: The University of Calgary, SAIT, Ambrose University and College, and Mount Royal University.
