Deerfoot construction to cause slow go in SE

Drivers who regularly take Deerfoot Trail in the southeast could be in for some headaches.

Construction will be getting in the way for about a couple months.

Starting Friday night, bridge work starts on the Ivor Strong, located just south of Anderson Road.

Alberta Government Public Affairs Officer Adam Johnson says expansion joints will be getting overhauled during the project.

“The expansion joints, in case you’re wondering, are assembly designed to safely absorb any heat induced expansion of construction materials. It’s just pretty standard work that needs to take place in order to keep the maintenance work up on the bridge,” he said.

He says the work will go until about July 4.

It will knock Deerfoot Trail down to two lanes each direction over the Ivor Strong, and speed limits will be reduced to 50 km/h.

Johnson says that means drivers may be tagging upwards of 30 minutes on their rush hour commute, with Macleod Trail, Elbow Drive and Stoney Trail good alternate routes.
