Handler facing charges after police dog bites boy

A police dog’s handler is facing charges after the animal chased down and bit a young boy.
The city and Calgary police investigated the March 30 incident, after reports the Canine Unit dog got loose from the officer’s yard in Aspen Woods and bit the boy.
The handler faces three counts of an animal running at large, and one charge of an animal attacking a person causing severe injury.
Community Standards Manager Alvin Murray says the city’s investigation into the attack involved working closely with the CPS.
A prior incident is included in these charges, where a Doberman belonging to the owner ran at large with the police dog on March 11.
The dog underwent socialization as well as obedience and control testing. In all cases, the dog tested above standards. He also completed a re-certification, which is typically done on an annual basis, and tested above standards.
Despite the test results, the service has determined that it is in the best interest of the dog and community to return the animal to the originating broker in the United States.
CPS continues to investigate the dog handler’s performance in the line of duty.
In the meantime, he remains with the Canine Unit.
