Silver anniversary for special YYC tradition

Calgary’s white hat tradition dates back to the 1940s, but it has really come to prominence through the airport’s White Hat Volunteer program, which is now celebrating its silver anniversary of 25 years.
Garth Atkinson, president and CEO of the Calgary Airport Authority, is proud of what the western ambassadors have accomplished and how they’ve become a brand for our city with their white hats, red vests and of course, big smiles.
“In 1991, we came up with what we thought was a small idea,” he said. “It’s grown over the years to something iconic not just for the airport, but for Calgary as a whole.”
The White Hat Volunteer program began in 1991 with 45 Calgarians taking part.
It’s grown with the airport since then to greet more than 15 million passengers who touch down in Calgary every year.
