Bear warning out for Banff National Park

Several bold incidents involving bruins within Banff National Park have led officials to issue a bear warning.

One happened Sunday night, after a grizzly bear had a close encounter with a group of hikers at Bourgeau Lake.

“They played ‘follow the leader’ all the way back down the trail,” resource conservation manager Bill Hunt explained. “The group eventually picked up other groups of hikers and advised them to turn around and follow them back down. Eventually, at some point down the mountain, there was a group of nine hikers ahead of the bear. At that point, they deployed a bear banger and managed to haze the bear off.”

In a second instance, there were reports of black bear activity, climbing on garbage bins near Two Jack Campground.

Officials said they are continuing to monitor the situation.
