Calgarians react to spike in crime

Calgarians appear to be split on whether a recent uptick in crime is a major concern.
Statistics Canada released crime numbers Wednesday, showing a 25 per cent increase in the number of crimes committed in Calgary in 2015, compared to the year before.
660 NEWS took to the park in front of the courthouse to ask people how concerned they are by the numbers.
Some say it’s upsetting, but most others didn’t even know it was a problem.
“I am not surprised because of what we see in the media but am I concerned? Not really, ” said one woman.
One man said, “This is the worst I’ve ever seen. It keeps changing all the time.”
“I know it was on its way up, everyone knows anybody who lives here. I’ve been here 35 years and it’s the worst I have ever seen it,” claims another man.
Many are attributing the increase to life in a big city and the poor economy.
Police Chief Roger Chaffin says the crime rates have dropped since the data was collected, but admitted there were some on-going issues related to the economy and addictions, which are fueling spikes in break and enters, robberies and thefts.
